They are the good guys

Maybe they swing the magic wand over their cool gray boxes somewhere on the assembly line. We don't know, but what we do know is that Blackmagic Design has delivered a lot of cool video hardware for a bargain in the hands of customers on a shoe string budget. And they seem to have a friendly and open approach to third party development around their products. This deserves credit.

"Blackmagic Design is dedicated to allowing the highest quality video to be affordable to everyone, so the post production and television industry can become a truly creative industry."

These are the words of Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design (BMD). We believe they are correct judged from their track record. We're mostly using their live video products, in particular their ATEM Video Switchers which certainly has made "live editing" of HD video a reality for people on a budget! Generally we feel they put products in our hands which are very powerful but still affordable relative to the rest of the industry they are in (professional broadcast). One example we could highlight with the ATEM Switchers is how the switcher hardware itself - the unit that takes the video inputs and mixes them - is now like 1/10th of the price it was just before their launch of the ATEM TeleVision Studio. However, the catch is that you need a laptop to control the switcher and to broadcast professionals that feels uncomfy. So, professionals will opt to buy BMDs Broadcast Panel which is a considerable expense bringing the total system cost closer to the competitors. Basically the price you pay to have a physical button to push. But everyone wins. Professionals can maintain their workflows and keep their habits while the rest of us can get the same result but have to "suffer" a virtual control interface. We see the parallel in open source software: The software is free so everyone can have it, but if time is valuable to you, you might like to pay a consultant to help you configure it while people on a budget can invest their time into learning it and making it work themselves. The same model applies to our open hardware solutions you find on this website.

Blackmagic Design also has some quirks which you learn to love to hate. They are the kind of company which confirms the truth of the saying "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"; They are notoriously shipping new products later - sometimes much later - than originally announced - and that is such a pain when you're just drooling to get your hands on one of their new inventions! Don't count on their products and specs before you hold them in your hand. But luckily we do just that with the ATEM Switchers now!

Generally, Blackmagic Design are easy to love and we're big fans so far. +1 to you guys!
